In our experience, operational areas often lack a strategy to begin with, having just evolved as the business grew. The most commonplace strategic flaws in operational areas is how the flow of work moves around the operation. Unnecessary segmentation, ring-fenced teams, lack of common processing practices and a poor organisational design.

Once we understand the basic function of the business, we then peel the onion back to look at various aspects of the operational strategy. This doesn't have to be a programme of epic proportions. Setting the strategy is not the difficult part, the difficultly lies in how you 'operationalise' your strategy and turn it into Business As Usual.
